The GMS is the key sub-system of the Integrated Fire Control System, used in MBT ARJUN Tank to engage ground targets. GMS is an integrated Day cum Night sight,Consisting of Day sight, Thermal Imager & Laser Range finder. The GMS system is coupled to a Fire Control Computer (FCC) and a Gun Control System (GCS) thus enabling the tank and the gunner to engage ground targets, irrespective of it being stationary or moving, by day as well as night with the tank itself either being stationaryor on the move.
GMS performs the following functions
Digital Inter Communication System is a state of art equipment meant for intercommunication of crew members of Armoured fighting vehicles. It can provide interface support for accessing of radio sets by many crew members at the same time. It also supports for exchanging of digital data files from one crew member to other crew member through serial link. Data communication with other vehicles over Radio sets is also possible.
The basic system components are
The operation of the Digital Intercom System (DIS) is controlled from the Central Unit (CU) whereas all the Crewmember units (CMU) provide user interface functionality. CMU's work as User terminals and all the functions and features of voice and data connections, selecting the requested operator. The requested party receives a call by an indication on the CMU. The called person can reject or accept the call. If the call is accepted the system automatically establishes a connection between the parties and simultaneously removes them from the "INTERCOM" conference. When the call is rejected the calling party will be informed by a red LED on the CMU.
The Advanced Land Navigation System (ALNS) is an equipment mounted in 'A' vehicles for the purpose of Land Navigation in featureless terrain. The equipment is used for traversing a path defined by coordinates of a military map. The ALNS guides the Commander as well as the Driver by dynamically updating the vehicle's present position and the bearing to the selected destination. The basic sensor used in the system is called Inertial Measurement Unit.
In Inertial Mode Systems operates completely on the Inertial Sensor Inputs. In Hybrid Mode it takes the inputs from Inertial Sensor as well as GPS receiver and selects the most accurate data for calculations of Navigational Parameters. In GPS mode system is independent of Inertial Sensor Inputs.
Tank Intercom System, R-174 Mk-II, is meant for Intercommunication between crew members of a Tank. This can also be used for communication between the crew member of a tank with the crew member of other Tank through Radio. The system is designed for compatibility with Radio Sets R-173, CNR, STARS-V and TADIRAN.
VHF Transreceiver – AFV Radio is a Software Controlled Frequency Hopping Radio in the frequency band of 30-88 MHz. The design of the Radio is based on Digital Signal Processor (DSP) and Direct Digital Frequency Synthesis (DDFS). The Radio works in Anti- jam Frequency Hopping and Fixed Frequency modes with built-in High Grade Digital Secrecy. The Radio support both Voice and Data communication. The Radio is specially designed for fitment in Armored Fighter Vehicles like T-72 tanks, BMP's and Truck/ Ground Role.
This Radio Set is Compatible with STARS-V MK-I and MK-II in FF Secure, FH1 & FH2
Instant Fire Detection and Suppression System (IFDSS) is a micro controller based fire detection and suppression system for vehicle/Tanks. The Equipment automatically detects the fire and suppression of fire is carried out either automatic or pressing manual override switch in crew as well as in engine compartment of the tank.
The detector unit have IR sensors and detects the fire in crew compartment and send the confirmation signal of fire to Main Control Unit (MCU) over Control Area Network protocol. The Main Control Unit (MCU) takes the necessary action to activate the fire Extinguishers.
A “Fire-Wire” is a flexible heat detecting wire, having one or more elements joined in series by means of various connector accessories. It is simply a linear Thermal Detector, which is directly interfaced with the Main Control Unit. It’s logic is designed for detection “Over Heat”, “Fire”, “Open Circuit” and “Short Circuit” conditions.
The system has feature of continuous health monitoring of Detector Units, Alarm and Flasher unit, Fire wire and Fire Extinguishers. The system also has the features like Built in Test facility (BITE) and Audio-Visual indication of “Over Heat” and “Fire” conditions in Engine compartment.
Instant Fire Detection and Suppression System (IFDSS) is a micro controller based fire detection and suppression system for vehicle and Tanks. The system automatically detects the fire in the crew compartment and overheat / fire condition of the engine compartment. Suppression is carried out instantly by the system in two modes namely; Automatic and Manual.
IR sensors of the Detector Unit detects the fire in crew compartment and built-in control logic sends the confirmation of fire to Master Control Unit (MCU) using Control Area Network (CAN) protocol. MCU then activates the audio visual alarm and actuates the squib of fire extinguishers to extinguish the fire instantly.
Fire-wire used in Engine compartment, is a flexible heat detecting wire, having one or more elements joined in series by means of various connector accessories. It is simply a linear Thermal Detector, which is directly interfaced with the Main Control Unit. It’s logic is designed for detection “Over Heat”, “Fire”, “Open Circuit” and “Short Circuit” conditions
The system has feature of continuous health monitoring of Detector Units, Alarm and Flasher unit, Fire wire and on demand connectivity check for the Fire Extinguishers. The system also has the features like Built in Test facility (BITE) and Audio-Visual indication of “Over Heat” and “Fire” conditions in Engine compartment.
BMP II Stabilizer System, 2E36-4, is an all electric drive system used for stabilizing 30 mm automatic gun, 7.62 mm co-axial gun (Machine Gun), mounted on the Infantry Fighting Vehicle (BMP-II). It controls the guns in both Traverse and Elevation for firing at the ground targets on the move and at halt.
The stabilizer provides the semiautomatic traverse and elevation laying when engaging aerial targets at halt. The commanders traverse target designation, make it possible for the commander and operator to operate twin gun mount.
It is having two modes of operations namely Auto and Aided. Aided mode is useful for aerial target at halt. Pulse width modulated H bridge configured amplifiers are used in each channel for driving the motors. As a result of stabilization, Gun retains the present orientation in space when tank moves over broken terrain, while tank hulloscillates vertically and horizontally.
The stabilizer system (Article 2342-4) of T-90S is intended for stabilization and laying of the tank main gun and the paired co-axial gun in Elevation and in Traverse. It is designed to increase the effeciency of fire while the tank is stationary and also on the move for all types of ammunitions in real conditions of tank operation. It consists of Electromechanical Traverse Drive and Electro Hydraulic Elevation Drive
Control Unit (K1) has PCBs for Traverse and Elevation operations separately.
During the movement of the Tank , if the gun under the influence of external disturbance is shifted from the earlier set value , then the power stabilization drives brings the gun to the initial position.
Any external disturbance acting on the Gun is sensed by the gyros and the error voltage is processed in control unit (K1). The out put of control unit is fed to the electromagnet windings of the actuating cylinder, wherein a differential current flows. This is converted into a suitable movement of the gun through the Hydraulic drive system consisting of Feeder Unit and actuating cylinder.
The traverse operation is also similar to that of Elevation except that instead of Hydraulic System, an Amplidyne & Electric Motor is used to rotate the turret.
AERV is a tracked vehicle based system which can be used by Defence Forces for day and night land reconnaissance, water reconnaissance and navigation.
NBC RV is a tracked vehicle based system used by Defence Forces for NBC reconnaissance.
The Air Defence Weapon Station (ADWS) is intended to lay and Stabilise the NSVT 12.7 mm machine gun along with the optical sensors in traverse and elevation mounted on the mobile platform. The system provides movement of the gun in traverse and elevation along with independent movement of the sight in elevation and with limited freedom in traverse.
The optical sensors include a day camera, Thermal imager and a Laser range Finder integrated on a single housing. The system allows automatic target tracking for air and ground targets and performs necessary ballistic computations to feed the ballistic offsets to the gun / sight.
Kavach system creates a false target by launching a Chaff rocket during enemy’s surveillance and attack and this chaff will be misinterpreted as a target and hence protect the ship.
